LA Clippers @ Phoenix Suns Tips

The Western Conference’s third-ranked team the LA Clippers take on the Phoenix Suns, ranked one place above them in second in a crucial NBA Western Conference regular season game on Thursday, April 29. This will be the third time these two teams have played each other this season; the Clippers won their first meeting back in January, 112-107, and then defeated Phoenix again the following month 113-103.

As previously stated, the LA Clippers are currently third in the Western Conference, behind the second-placed Phoenix Suns, and leaders the Utah Jazz. While Utah have been top dogs in the Western Conference all season, originally their closest rivals were the LA Lakers. First to bypass the defending NBA Champions were Phoenix, who put a poor January behind them and have played tremendously ever since.

Next came the Clippers, who also threw off a patchy first couple of months and have been an absolute force to be reckoned with ever since, leaving their illustrious city rivals in their slipstream. Utah, Phoenix and LA all have excellent chances of landing what would be a first ever NBA Championship for each of them this year.

Regarding Thursday’s game; there is almost nothing to split these two teams, but based purely off each team’s most recent performance I’m backing the Phoenix Suns to score their first win over the LA Clippers this season. For the record, the Clippers were beaten by the New Orleans Pelicans, while Phoenix scored a sensational victory over the most in-form team in the NBA, ending the New York Knicks’ nine-match winning streak (watched by Kendall Jenner among others).

  • Clippers 3rd in Western Conference
  • Clippers 43-20 this season
  • Suns 2nd in Western Conference
  • Suns 43-18 this season

Head to Head

The LA Clippers and the Phoenix Suns have played each other a total of 226 times, with Phoenix currently leading their head-to-head by 132 wins to 94. Over this season plus the two previous, these two teams have played each other 10 times, with LA leading 8-2. The Clippers and the Suns have met twice this season, with LA winning both, by 112-107 in January, and by 113-103 in April.

LA Clippers Form

The LA Clippers have played 63 games this season, winning 43 and losing 20 for a win percentage of 0.683. The Clippers have won more games than anybody in the NBA this season except for the Utah Jazz with 44 wins (and 17 defeats). Last season the Clippers finished second in the Western Conference, and if they defeat the Phoenix Suns on Thursday they will move into second place, with just nine games left to play.

On Tuesday, the Clippers suffered a rare defeat, only the second in their last 13 games, losing to the New Orleans Pelicans 120-103. It was an oddly flat performance by the Clippers, and even one of their star players Paul George said as much:

"We just didn't bring it, we were flat tonight. We were out of sync. And give them credit. ... They played a great game tonight, defensively and offensively. They were hot."

One can only guess that LA were less than pumped with the prospect of playing the 11th ranked Pelicans, but that won’t be the case on Thursday when they play a huge game against one of their biggest rivals.

Phoenix Suns Form

The Phoenix Suns have played 61 games this season, winning 43 and losing just 18 for a 0.705 win percentage, the second best in the NBA behind only the Utah Jazz. There are 72 games in an NBA regular-season, so Phoenix have 11 games more to play, and could yet eclipse Utah at the top of the table.

Phoenix are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and any concern that they had suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since January will surely be forgotten following their superb victory over New York on Tuesday, handing the Knicks their first defeat in 10 games. Phoenix won by 118-110, with Devin Booker scoring 33 points.

Verdict

For fans of the NBA, it doesn’t get any bigger – or better – than this, at least not until we get to the playoffs. Needless to say, both the LA Clippers and the Phoenix Suns will be a part of those playoffs, and both will be seeded. This game is all about pride, and taking a step closer to finishing the season on top of the Western Conference.

Had it not been for Phoenix’s stunning performance on Tuesday in defeating the New York Knicks and ending their nine-game winning streak, I would have backed the Clippers to win on Thursday, even though they themselves were beaten by New Orleans that same day.

As it is, I’m predicting Phoenix win a tremendous tussle by 10 points or less in a match that will be all tactics and tension and will feature less than 220 points.
