Golden State Warriors @ Phoenix Suns Tips

One of the great teams of this millennium, the Golden State Warriors takes on the second best team in the NBA right now when they face the ever-improving Phoenix Suns on Friday, March 5. Three-time NBA champions Golden State are currently eighth in the Western Conference but very much in the running for a post-season playoff place. Phoenix are fresh off a comprehensive victory over the LA Lakers, just the latest in a long string of victories that has taken them to second in the Western Conference.

This will be the second meeting between Golden State and Phoenix this season. They first played each other in late January, with Phoenix winning 114-93. Now comes the rematch, and Phoenix are a much improved team from the one Golden State faced six weeks ago.

These days the Suns rarely lose, and when they do, it’s by a handful of points, as in their last defeat in February to the Charlotte Hornets 124-121. Increasingly Phoenix are dominating their games, and even defending NBA champions the LA Lakers were comprehensively beaten in their most recent game on Wednesday (March 3).

Because of those reasons, I’m backing the Suns to win convincingly against the Warriors, securing victory by at least 10 points in a game that will feature a combined points total of at least 230.

  • Golden State 8th in Western Conference
  • Golden Sate 19-16 this season
  • Phoenix 2nd in Western Conference
  • Phoenix 23-11 this season

Head to Head

The Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns have played each other a total of 249 times, with Phoenix leading their head-to-head by 141 wins to 108. In the seven most recent matches they have played since the start of 2019, Phoenix lead 4-3. Their most recent encounter in January of this season saw Phoenix win 114-93.

Golden State Warriors Form

The Golden State Warriors have won 19 and lost 16 games this season for a win percentage of 0.543. The Warriors are currently eighth in the Western Conference and fourth in the Pacific Division, behind the Phoenix Suns, LA Lakers and LA Clippers. After Golden State’s incredible achievements between 2015 and 2019 (5 Pacific Division trophies, 5 Western Conference trophies, 3 NBA Championships) right now the team is going through a rebuilding phase.

As long as they can hang on to eighth spot or better in the Western Conference, Golden State will still be headed for the play-offs come the end of the regular season. The Warriors are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and although they lost their most recent game to the LA Lakers and Monday (March 1), they had previously won three straight matches.

Key to the consistency of Golden State this season has been the ever-remarkable Steph Curry, still one of the best players in the NBA, and once again the Warriors leading points scorer this season. Curry has been aided and abetted by Draymond Green, whose contribution in the number of high rebounds and assists he produces game after game has been immense.

Phoenix Suns Form

Might the Phoenix Suns be on the brink of becoming the new Golden State Warriors and go on a trophy winning spree of their own? It’s starting to look like the team that manager James Jones has put together can achieve greatness. Certainly their run since the end of January of 15 wins against 3 defeats is unmatched by even the Utah Jazz. In fact, as the Jazz appear to be currently imploding, Phoenix may soon overtake them as the team with the best record in the NBA this season.

Another mind-boggling Phoenix stat is that the team has never scored less than 100 points in a game all season, win or lose – testament to consistency of main points scorer Devin Booker, rebounds specialist Deandre Ayton, and their leader in assists Chris Paul.

Going into Friday’s match against Golden State, Phoenix  are on a three-game winning run, capped by Wednesday’s remarkable 114-104 win over defending NBA champion the Los Angeles Lakers. Whether that game was a “passing of the torch” remains to be seen.

Verdict

Right now, it’s extremely tough bet against the Phoenix Suns, no matter who they are playing. Two seasons ago, it would’ve been a different story, as the all conquering Golden State team were one of the best ever assembled.

Right now the Warriors are a team in transition, although still good enough to make the playoffs and not to be taken lightly. I’m backing Phoenix to win this game by at least 10 points in a match featuring a combined total of at least 230 points.
