Dallas Mavericks @ Portland Trail Blazers Tips

The Dallas Mavericks take on the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, March 20 in an NBA Western Conference regular-season game. Dallas are currently second in the Southwest Division behind the San Antonio Spurs, while Portland are third in the Northwest Division, behind leaders the Utah Jazz and the Denver Nuggets in second.

This will be the second time these two teams have played each other this season. In mid February, Portland defeated Dallas 121-118, with Damien Lillard scoring 34 points for the Trail Blazers. However, regardless of that defeat, based off their excellent performance against the LA Clippers I’m backing the Mavericks to turn the tables on Portland this time around and win this game by 10 points or less, in a matchup that will feature around 220 points or less.

  • Dallas 2nd in Southwest Division
  • Dallas 21-18 this season
  • Portland third in Northwest Division
  • Portland 23-16 this season

Head to Head

The Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers have played each other a total of 162 times in NBA regular-season games. Currently Portland lead Dallas by 87 wins to 75. Over the past three seasons, the Mavericks and the Trail Blazers have played each other nine times, with Portland leading 5-4. In their most recent meeting, in February of this year, the Trail Blazers won 121-118.

Dallas Mavericks Form

On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks defeated the LA Clippers 105-89, with their 22-year-old star player Luka Doncic scoring 42 points and grabbing nine assists. The win was sweet revenge for Dallas who would had lost to the Clippers two days earlier. It was also the Mavericks’ sixth win in their last eight games.

Dallas are currently second in the Western Conference Southwest Division, with 21 wins and 18 defeats for a 0.538 win percentage. Dallas had a shaky start to the season, and by the end of January had suffered 11 defeats. However, throughout February and March, the Mavericks have gone 13-5 and climbed from bottom of the Southwest Division to chasing San Antonio for top-spot.

Portland Trail Blazers Form

The Portland Trail Blazers are currently third in the Western Conference Northwest Division, with 23 wins and 16 defeats for a 0.590 percentage. Portland are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and last time out, they defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, albeit by a single point; 125-124. That was Portland’s fifth win in their last seven games.

Portland are currently sixth in the Western Conference, two places above the Dallas Mavericks who are holding onto that all-important eighth spot, which is the cutoff point for qualification for the playoffs. Although Portland haven’t yet claimed an NBA Championship, they have won the Western Conference three times and last finished top of the Southwest Division in 2018.

Outstanding for Portland this season has been Damian Lillard, who leads both for points per game (30.5) and assists (8.0). Lillard was in particularly devastating form against the Pelicans on Wednesday, scoring 50 points.

Verdict

There is very little to split these two teams; both are in the running for making the playoffs this season, and both are currently winning more games than they are losing. Dallas rank higher in their respective division, but Portland are two places above them in the Western Conference.

I am however backing the Dallas Mavericks to win this game, based off their impressive performance against the LA Clippers last time out. By comparison, the Trail Blazers had to battle for all they were worth to overcome the lowly Pelicans.

Additionally, Dallas will have enjoyed an extra days rest prior to facing Portland. The Mavericks will win this game by 10 points or less in a match that will feature 220 points or less.
