Charlotte Hornets @ LA Clippers Tips

The Charlotte Hornets take on the LA Clippers on Sunday, March 21 in an NBA cross-conference regular-season game. Charlotte are third in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division, and the Clippers are third in the Western Conference Pacific Division. Both of these teams are in with a shot at making the playoffs but both need to step up their games after suffering a loss of form.

This will be the first time these two teams have played each this season, and they last met in October 2019, when the LA Clippers emerged victorious 111-96. The Hornets go into this game with a little more consistency than their rivals; over the past 10 games Charlotte are 6-4 while the Clippers are 4-6. In their most recent outing, Charlotte pushed Clippers’ city-rivals the LA Lakers all the way in a losing effort on Thursday (March 18).

I’m backing the Charlotte Hornets to pull off a bit of an upset on Sunday with a victory over the LA Clippers. Despite their negative record against the Clippers in their recent head-to-head, I was impressed with the Hornets industry vs the Lakers. Charlotte will win this game by 10 points or less in a match that will feature around 220 points or under.

  • Hornets 3rd in Southeast Division
  • Hornets 20-20 this season
  • Clippers 3rd in Pacific Division
  • Clippers 26-16 this season

Head to Head

The Charlotte Hornets and the LA Clippers have played each other a total of 58 times, with the Clippers currently ahead 33-25. Because these two teams are in separate conferences, they don’t get to play each other very often. Over the past three seasons, they have met just five times, and the Clippers lead 4-1. Their most recent game was in October 2019, and on that occasion the LA Clippers were victorious 111-96.

Charlotte Hornets Form

The Charlotte Hornets are currently third in the Southeast Division, with 20 wins and 20 defeats for a 0.500 win percentage. While they have lost their last two games, overall the Hornets are 6-4 in their last 10 games. Charlotte currently occupy seventh place in the Eastern Conference, with the best eight teams qualifying for the postseason playoffs.

In their most recent game, the Hornets’ young team spearheaded by 19-year old phenom LaMelo Ball gave a great account of themselves against the vast experience of the LA Lakers and players like LeBron James. Over the first two quarters, the Lakers opened up a 15-point lead, but Charlotte pulled that deficit back dramatically in the third quarter with a 34-23 performance, cutting the Lakers lead to just four points.

However the Lakers are the defending NBA champions because of situations just like this, and it was them that finished the stronger, dominating the final quarter and ultimately running out 116-105 winners (with another standout performance from their rejuvenated star player LeBron James, who scored 37 points).

LA Clippers Form

The LA Clippers are third in the Pacific Division behind the Phoenix Suns and new leaders the LA Lakers. The Clippers are fourth in the Western Conference, and barring a complete disaster are a virtual certainty to reach the playoffs this season. The Clippers have won 26 games and lost 16, and have winning records both at home (13-6) and on the road (13-10).

In their last two games, the Clippers exchanged results with the Dallas Mavericks. LA were victorious in Tuesday’s game 109-99, but were well beaten in the rematch two days later 105-89. In that game, the Clippers started stronger and were five points ahead after the first quarter, but dropped 10 points in the second quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, the Clippers were down 71-77 and needed a strong finish, but instead they folded, letting the Mavericks dominate the final quarter and runaway convincing winners by 16 points.

Verdict

Both the Charlotte Hornets and the LA Clippers go into this game in need of a confidence booster, after both suffered comprehensive defeats by more than 10 points, Charlotte going down 116-105 to the Lakers, and the Clippers getting thumped 105-89 by the Dallas Mavericks.

Based off both teams’ current form and conference positions, this is a tough matchup to call. However I’m going to go with the Charlotte Hornets to pull off the win, based off their greater energy displayed against one of the favourites for the NBA championship.

I’m backing the Hornets to win this game by less than 10 points, in a match up that will feature a total of 220 points or less.
