Houston Rockets @ LA Clippers Tips

The Houston Rockets take on the LA Clippers in an NBA Western Conference regular season game on Saturday, April 10. These two teams are having very different seasons so far, with the Clippers currently third in the Western Conference, while Houston are second from bottom.

This will be the first time these two teams have played each other this season. The last time they met was in March 2020, and on that occasion the Clippers won by a score line of 120-105. Although their overall head-to-head favors Houston, the Clippers have had the slight edge over the past two seasons.

The LA Clippers have overcome a couple of sticky patches during the course of their season to become a very solid team that looks certain to be headed for the playoffs, and on the short list of NBA championship contenders. I’m backing the Clippers to defeat the Rockets on Saturday by around 12-15 points.

  • Houston 14th in Western Conference
  • Houston 14-37 this season
  • Clippers 3rd in Western Conference
  • Clippers 34-18 this season

Head to Head

The Houston Rockets and the LA Clippers have played each other a total of 203 times, with Houston currently leading their head-to-head by 123 wins to 80. Over the past two seasons, the Rockets and the Clippers have played each other seven times, with the Clippers leading 4-3. The last time the Clippers and the Rockets played each other was in March 2020, with the Clippers winning 120-105.

Houston Rockets Form

The Houston Rockets are currently bottom of the Southwest Division, and second from bottom of the Western Conference. Houston have a record of 14-37 this season, and are 3-7 in their last 10 games.  Houston’s one and only “Purple-Patch” this season occurred from late January to early February and saw them win 7 out of 8 games. That sequence didn’t last unfortunately, and the Rockets promptly lost their next 20 contests.

Houston will actually go into Saturday’s game against the Clippers off the back of a win; on Thursday (April 8) they defeated the Dallas Mavericks 102-93. Dallas are currently top of the Southwest Division. John Wall was Houston’s main points scorer with 31.

LA Clippers Form

It’s tough for a team when they are constantly living in the shadow of a franchise of the caliber of the Los Angeles Lakers, but that’s the story of the LA Clippers in a nutshell. The Los Angeles Clippers only became who they currently are in 1984, having previously been the San Diego Clippers, and prior to that Buffalo Braves. Thus far, the sum total of trophies won by the Clippers are a pair of Pacific Division titles won in 2013 and 2014.

However, this could be the year that the Clippers win the actual NBA championships. Sure, the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns are the more likely candidates right now, but the Clippers are currently the fifth best team overall in the NBA according to its league. The Clippers are in great form right now, having won eight of their last 10 games. In their most recent game they defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 133-116.

Verdict

While overall the Houston Rockets have a winning record against the LA Clippers, over the past couple of seasons the Clippers have had the edge over the Rockets. Despite sharing the same conference, this will be the first meeting this season between these two teams.

Houston proved in their most recent game - and upset win over Southwest Division leaders the Dallas Mavericks – that they are a dangerous team. However, I have to go with the class and skill shown this season by the LA Clippers, and I’m backing them to win on Saturday by between 10-15 points, in a matchup that will feature less than 220.
