Washington Nationals @ Los Angeles Dodgers Tips

It will be a genuine heavyweight encounter when the 2019 World Series winners the Washington Nationals take on the 2020 World Series champions the LA Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium in an MLB National League regular-season game on Friday, April 9. This will be the first of three consecutive games between the Nationals and the Dodgers.

The LA Dodgers have made an impressive start to their 2021 campaign; they are top of the NL West Division with five wins from seven games. The Washington Nationals are third in the NL East Division having played just three games (1-2) because of COVID related postponements. Their reign as World Series champions came to an end when they finished fourth in the NL East Division last year with a 26-34 record.

The last year in which these two teams competed against each other was 2019 and they finished with six wins apiece, the Nationals winning their ultimate encounter 7-3. Based purely off the fact that the Dodgers have played more baseball and won more games than Washington, I’m backing LA to win on Friday.

Head to Head

The Washington Nationals and the LA Dodgers haven’t played each other since 2019. During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the Nationals and the Dodgers competed on 18 occasions, with the scoreline 11-7 in the Dodgers favor. During the 2019 season they played each other 12 times, each winning six matches. In their most recent encounter in September 2019, Washington were the winners 7-3.

LA Dodgers Form

Even though last season had a reduced format of just 60 games, the LA Dodgers finished with an impressive record of 43-17, a winning percentage of 0.717, the best in the league for 2020. This year they will have to do it again but over the course of a regular 162-game season if they are to retain their World Series trophy.

The Dodgers have certainly started their campaign impressively; after suffering a surprise 5-8 defeat against the Colorado Rockies on April 1, the Dodgers rattled off five consecutive victories, defeating the Rockies in their next three matches, and then going 3-0 against the Oakland Athletics before their winning streak ultimately came to an end on Wednesday (April 7) when they were beaten 4-3 by Oakland.

Washington Nationals Form

After their heroics in 2019 that saw them become just the seventh wildcard to win the World Series – the first such trophy in their history – 2020 proved to be a major disappointment. Washington could only finish fourth in the National League East Division with a record of 26 wins and 34 defeats, failing even to make the playoffs.

Washington performed well during 2021 Spring Training, finishing sixth in the Grapefruit League with a record of 10 wins and nine defeats. However, thanks to the global pandemic, the Nationals first four games of the new season were postponed, pushing back their opening match to April 6, where they scored a 6-5 victory over Atlanta. They subsequently lost their next two matches to Atlanta 7-6 and 2-0.

Friday’s matchup between the Washington Nationals and LA Dodgers is a truly mouthwatering encounter between the last two World Series winners. What’s more, they haven’t faced each other since 2019, the year that Washington won their title.
Unfortunately for the Nationals, because of postponements they have only played three games this season, winning just one. Meanwhile the Dodgers have played seven, winning five. I’m backing the Dodgers to win this game in impressive fashion, with a final score along the lines of 8-2, and a runs total of at least 10.
