Texas Rangers @ Chicago White Sox Tips

The Texas Rangers take on the Chicago White Sox in an American League MLB regular season game on Saturday, April 24. This is the first of a three-match series between these two teams, and these will be their first games against each other since 2019. Texas are fourth in the AL West Division, while Chicago are second in the AL Central Division.

Texas have won nine and lost ten of their opening 19 games this season. While it’s a positive factor that the team are winning plenty of matches, on the flip side they have already been beaten ten times. Chicago have almost the exact same record as Texas (9-9) but because their division is weaker, their slate is good enough for them to be in second-place.

I’m backing the Chicago White Sox to win the opening game of this series, defeating the Texas Rangers in a highly competitive game that will feature 10 or more runs.

  • Texas 4th in AL West Division
  • Texas 9-10 this season
  • Chicago 2nd in AL Central Division
  • Chicago 9-9 this season

Head to Head

The Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox didn’t face each other at all in 2020. In 2019 they played each other seven times, with the score 4-3 in Chicago’s favor. In 2021 they are scheduled to meet six times in total during the MLB regular season, their first competitive matches against each other for two years.

Texas Rangers Form

Twice World Series finalists in 2010 and 2011, those two resulting American League Pennants  remain the pinnacle of the Texas Rangers’ achievements, along with seven AL West Division titles, most recently in 2016.  However, last season Texas finished bottom of the AL West Division in 2020 with a record of 22-38.

There have been reasons for fans to be positive about their team this season; Texas have already scored three series wins - over the Toronto Blue Jays (2-1), the LA Angels (2-1), and most impressively they defeated last year’s World Series runners-up the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1. In their most recent game, the Rangers defeated the LA Angels 7-4, with pitcher John Edward King outstanding for Texas.

Chicago White Sox Form

The Chicago White Sox is a name on a par with the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox when it comes to worldwide fame and notoriety. A strong dose of that worldwide fame came most recently in 2005 when the White Sox won the World Series for the first time in 88 seasons.

Notoriety for Chicago will always remain in the shape of the notorious “Black Sox” match fixing scandal of 1919, in which the Chicago White Sox were accused (and acquitted) of throwing the World Series.

Last season, the White Sox finished third in the AL Central Division with a record of 35 wins and 25 defeats, good enough to be given a Wild Card berth to the playoffs. However, Chicago were beaten at the quarterfinal (or Wild Card Series) stage, going down 2-1 against the Oakland Athletics. The White Sox go into this series against Texas off the back of an 8-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox haven’t played each other in two years, and go into this series with almost identical records of 9-10 and 9-9 respectively.

I’m backing the Chicago White Sox to win this opening fixture, based purely off the fact that the Texas Rangers have suffered heavier defeats than Chicago, indicating they are weaker defensively (Texas have a run difference of -11, while Chicago’s is +14).

This will be a highly competitive game that will feature at least 10 runs, the majority in Chicago's favour.
