St. Louis Cardinals @ San Diego Padres Live Stream & Tips

In what looks like the pick of Saturday’s games, National League Central Division leaders the St. Louis Cardinals take on the San Diego Padres, currently second in the NL West Division. This will be the first meeting between these two teams this season, and is the first of a three match series to be played out over the weekend and ending on Monday.

Both of these teams are riding high in the National League overall, with St. Louis second behind the San Francisco Giants, and the Padres fourth, behind the third placed New York Mets. The reigning World Series champions the LA Dodgers are currently fifth in the National League.

By its nature, Major League Baseball is highly competitive with teams playing almost every day during the regular season. It’s almost impossible for teams to have long winning streaks, although it does occasionally happen. Right now the team with the strongest record in MLB are the Chicago White Sox at 22-13 for a win percentage of 0.629. If that was the record of a Premiership football team, there would likely be mid-table at best.

There is little to split these two teams right now, but I’m going with the St. Louis Cardinals to defeat the San Diego Padres on Saturday based off both teams recent records; San Diego are 5-5 in their last 10 games, while St. Louis are 7-3, and have lost just one match in their last six.

  • Cardinals 2nd in National League
  • Cardinals 23-15 this season
  • Padres 4th in National League
  • Padres 21-17 this season

Head to Head

Since 2018, the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres have played each other just 13 times, with the score 8-5 in San Diego’s favor. These teams didn’t play each other at all during 2020, however they met six times in 2019 with the Padres finishing 4-2 up. In 2018 they played each other a further seven times, with the Padres finishing that season 4-3 up.

St. Louis Cardinals Form

The St. Louis Cardinals lost five of their opening six series’ of this season, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 1-2, defeating the Miami Marlins 3-0, losing to the Milwaukee Brewers 1-2, the Washington Nationals 1-2, the Philadelphia Phillies 1-2, and Washington again 1-2, before finally winning a second series, 3-0 over the Cincinnati Reds.

Next came a 2-2 series draw with Philadelphia, followed by a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, a 2-2 series draw with the New York Mets followed by series wins over the Colorado Rockies 3-0 and Milwaukee 2-1. Overall in terms of games won and lost, St. Louis are 23-15, with a win percentage of 0.605, a figure only bettered by the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago White Sox in MLB right now.

San Diego Padres Form

Last year during the regular season, the San Diego Padres had the second best record of any team in MLB aside from the Los Angeles Dodgers. This year the bookies had San Diego as second favorites to win the National League, behind the Dodgers, and they began the season in the shadow of their illustrious rivals.

Fast-forward, and the Dodgers, who began the season in tremendous form, are now third in the NL West Division, with the Padres second and the San Francisco Giants out in front. Overall, San Diego are fourth in the National League, one place above the Dodgers. Even though they lost last time out 3-2 against the Colorado Rockies, overall they won that series against the Rockies 2-1.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a St. Louis Cardinals @ San Diego Padres live stream

The St. Louis Cardinals record is 23-15, with an impressive run differential of +27. The record of the San Diego Padres is only slightly inferior at 21-17, while their run differential is exactly the same at +27.
However what separates these two teams is their recent form; while the Padres are 5-5 in their last 10 matches, the Cardinals are 7-3, and are an even more impressive 11-3 since the end of April.

I’m backing the Cardinals to defeat the Padres on Saturday in a game that will feature around 10 runs, with the final scoreline looking something like 7-3 or 8-2 in the favor of St. Louis.
