San Francisco Giants @ Seattle Mariners Tips

The San Francisco Giants play the Seattle Mariners at the T-Mobile Park on Thursday, April 1. This will be both teams first game of the 2021 MLB season. The great news for fans of MLB is this year teams will play the usual 162 games during the regular season. Last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the MLB season was reduced to just 60 games.

The San Francisco Giants are part of the National League and play out of the West Division, while the Seattle Mariners are from the American League, and theirs is the West Division. Each league has 15 teams divided into three divisions.

Last season the Giants and the Mariners played each other four times, with San Francisco winning all four matches, including a 10-1 thrashing last September. Regardless of those results, both teams underperformed last season, with each finishing third in their respective division and with losing records.

In pre-season spring training matches, Seattle have twice defeated San Francisco, and finished two places above them in the Cactus League. While the relevance of these results is questionable, it gives the Mariners a slight edge, and that might be all they need so early in a long season.

I’m backing Seattle to defeat San Francisco on Thursday by at least 2 points in a match that will feature around 5 points.

  • Giants finished 3rd in NL West Division
  • Giants 29-31 last season
  • Mariners finished 3rd in AL West Division
  • Mariners 27-33 last season

Head to Head

Since 2006 the San Francisco Giants and the Seattle Mariners have played each other 37 times, with Seattle leading 20-17. In their most recent eight meeting since the start of 2020, the Giants lead 6-2. They played each other twice in the pre-season, with the Mariners winning both. On Sunday Seattle beat San Francisco 5-0.

San Francisco Giants Form

Last season the Giants finished third in the NL West Division, behind the LA Dodgers and the San Diego Padres – with the Dodgers going on to win the World Series. After 60 games, the Giants had a 29-31 record. That should have been enough to earn them a playoff wildcard, but instead it went to the Milwaukee Brewers who had the same record as the Giants.

MLB has a pre-season known as Spring Training, and San Francisco finished 12th in the Cactus League, with a 11-12 record. The Giants finished spring training with a victory, avenging a 9-3 thrashing by the Oakland A’s with a 7-2 win the following day (March 29).

Seattle Mariners Form

The Mariners finished third in the AL West Division, with a 27-33 record for a 0.450 win percentage. Poor as their record was, it almost landed them a playoff wildcard, which instead went to the Houston Astros. In 2020 the Mariners and the Giants met four times, with San Francisco winning each time.

In the pre-season Seattle competed in the Cactus League, where they finished tenth with an 11-11 record. The Mariners finished spring training with a 5-0 whitewashing of San Francisco, and the following day (March 29) drew 5-5 with the Cincinnati Reds.

Verdict

Although the Giants dominated meetings with the Mariners during the 2020 MLB regular season, winning all four games, Seattle won both their matches this year during the pre-season. While the relevance of such results is up for debate, the teams certainly seemed to be playing to win.

However, the fact that they won both games must give the Mariners a slight edge in confidence. I’m backing Seattle to defeat San Francisco on Thursday by at least 2 runs in a match that will feature around 5 runs.
