Pittsburgh Pirates @ San Diego Padres Tips

The Pittsburgh Pirates take on the San Diego Padres in an MLB regular-season game on Wednesday, May 5. The Pirates are 5th in the National League Central Division, while the Padres are 3rd in the NL West Division. This will be their 6th meeting of 2021, with the Padres leading 3-2.

This game is the second of a three-match series between the Pirates and the Padres, with San Diego winning the opening game 2-0 on Tuesday. These teams also played a 4-match series back in April that finished all square at 2-2. The Padres have a record of 16-13, while the Pirates are 12-16.

San Diego are fresh off a 2-1 series victory over NL West Division leaders the San Francisco Giants. Pittsburgh are currently in a slump, having suffered five-straight defeats. Prior to Tuesday’s loss to the Padres, they were beaten 3-0 in their series against the St. Louis Cardinals, and also lost a match to Kansas City.

I’m backing the in-form San Diego Padres to win again against the Pittsburgh Pirates, this time by a more convincing score line in a matchup that will feature around eight runs. While the Pirates are a much better team than their current position would suggest, the Padres right now are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball.

  • Padres 3rd in NL West Division
  • Padres 17-13 this season
  • Pirates 5th in NL Central Division
  • Pirates 12-16 this season

Head to Head

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres have played each other 19 times in regular season games over the last three seasons, with the Pirates leading 11-8. They didn’t play each other in 2020, and in 2019 they played each other seven times, and the Pirates led 6-1. In the seven matches they played in 2018 the Padres held a 4-3 edge. This season they tied their April series 2-2, with San Diego winning their current series opener on Tuesday 2-0.

San Diego Padres Form

The San Diego Padres have won 16 matches and lost 13 for a win percentage of 0.552. While slowly improving, that figure is significantly down on the 0.617 they finished the 2020 regular season with. However, while they still lose the occasional match, the more important factor is the Padres are now winning the series.  They have recently scored series wins over the LA Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants in succession, and similar success against the Pirates could see them top the West Division this week.

San Diego got off to a winning start against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Pirates pitcher Tyler Anderson kept the Padres quiet until they made their match winning breakthrough in the seventh innings, although Pittsburgh kept the scoreline down to just 2-0. The outcome of Wednesday’s game could see the Padres go top and the Pirates stay bottom of their respective divisions.

Pittsburgh Pirates Form

The Pittsburgh Pirates are fifth in the National League Central Division, with 12 wins and 16 defeats for a 0.429 win percentage. Pittsburgh have finished bottom of the Central Division for the past two seasons. Manager Derek Shelton is in his second season in charge of the Pirates, and his no.1 goal will be to improve on last season’s non-performance. Pittsburgh are historically a great baseball team and are 5-time World Series winners, although their last title was in 1979.

Although Pittsburgh won their opener against the Chicago Cubs on April 1, they then went on to lose six consecutive games to the Cubs, before finally winning the last two of what was a nine match series. They then tied 2-2 with the San Diego Padres in a four match series. A subsequent purple patch of series wins over Detroit and Minnesota plus a 1-1 tie with Kansas have since been followed by their current five-match losing streak.

Verdict

After taking a little while to get into their stride, the San Diego Padres are now looking like one of the best teams in MLB, and their recent series wins over the reigning World Series Champions the New York Dodgers and the current West Division leaders the San Francisco Giants attests to that.

Right now, the Padres are playing too well for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are themselves a much better team than their lowly league position would suggest. I’m backing the Padres to win again, this time by a more convincing scoreline in a match that will feature around eight runs in total.
