Western Bulldogs vs Carlton, Round 18 2024 - Expert Prediction

Another interesting match up from Round 18 of the AFL with two high scoring teams in the Bulldogs and Blues both coming off drubbings last weekend. My prediction is that Carlton will regain their confidence with a win at Marvel this weekend.

Looking at both team’s performance last week there is more to take out of the Doggies being shut down than Carlton letting the game slip away after posting the highest first quarter total of the year. The Blues have been one of the most consistent outfits all season long and they finally had a moment of weakness letting their opponent get a grasp on the game.

The Western Bulldogs have been up and down with their form all season long, you never know what team is stepping out on the park and at times when they have met tough opponents the sandcastle has crumbled.

Expect Carlton’s coaching staff to have studied how Port were able to keep Marcus Bontempelli, Adam Treloar and Tom Liberatore subdued last weekend and ensure that happens again as they chase victory and push the Dogs further away from a chance at finals footy.

  • Carlton have the highest average for Centre Clearances in the AFL at 14.1 per game.
  • The Blues also average the most Goals per game of any team at 14.9.
  • The Doggies have the worst 1v1 Defence as well as the least amount of Pressure acts of any team in the league this year.
  • The Western Bulldogs allow their opponents the 4th most Marks Inside 50, giving up 24.8 per game.

Head to Head

Since the beginning of the 2019 season these two teams have met on 6 occasions with each taking 3 wins a piece. The Bulldogs had the most recent success with a victory in Round 9 last year 79-59. Prior to that the winning team has alternated each year.

Carlton hold a 5-1 ATS record in this period with the Underdog covering the line in all 6 games.

The Bulldogs were completely shut out of their game against Port Adelaide last weekend posting their lowest point total of the season whilst giving up the 3rd most points to their opposition this year.

The Western Bulldogs had no answer for an early onslaught from their opponents top line of players who took the ball at will also restricting players like Marcus Bontempelli and Aaron Naughton from getting their usual touches. Naughton was also then subbed out with concussion in a blow for the Doggies.

They were restricted to only 42 Inside 50’s in the game with a 35.7% Efficiency Rate up forward which is a telling stat for a high scoring team that has had trouble with the ball the last few weeks.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Alex Keath and Cody Weightman will need to pass fitness tests to be available for selection with Aaron Naughton and James O’Donnell still 1-2 weeks away with the AFL’s concussion protocols.

The Blues 5 game win streak was ended by the GWS Giants last weekend in a game full of momentum swings. The Blues went up early, dominating the ball and kicking 8 goals off 12 scoring shots in the 1st quarter posting the highest first quarter total of any team this year. Their opponent then took control of the game and blitzed the Blues kicking 15 of the next 20 goals in the match.

Carlton had trouble containing the Giants with their opposition passing the ball around and taking their opportunities through Uncontested Possessions and Marks Inside 50.

Carlton Team News

Tom De Koning and Jacob Weitering both sustained minor injuries in the loss to the Giants and will need to get through training this week to be selected. Hudson O’Keefe and Jack Martin are both likely to return but possibly through the VFL.
