West Coast Eagles vs Sydney Swans Tips

Sydney have a lot to answer for this week after their shock loss to Richmond in round 3 after many punters had the Swans already engraved on the Premiership Trophy. Sydney won’t stumble again and can put up a big score against the Eagles at Adelaide Hills on Saturday.

It was a really scratchy performance from the Swans last week, but it was good that it happened early in the season and then they have this match against West Coast to iron out the creases that formed.

Sydney will respond on Saturday with a big win, maybe not as much as the 171-point victory over West Coast that they had last season, but it could be triple figures.

I expect that we will see the Swans control the ball all day and have a real focus in front of goal making the adjustments they need to be more efficient inside 50 and in their shooting accuracy.

The weight of possession in the Swans favour will make it impossible for the Eagles to score over their team total of 59.5, while on the other side of things we will see Logan McDonald have a big day, kicking at least 3 goals.

  • Sydney has beaten West Coast by 63+ points in their last 3 meetings.
  • West Coast have failed to score 60 points or more in their last 3 matches against Sydney.
  • West Coast has scored 43 points or less in their past 2 games.
  • Logan McDonald has kicked 3+ goals in 2 of 4 games this season.

Head to Head

Sydney put 205 points on West Coast last season, beating the Eagles by 171 points in round 15 last season with Isaac Heeney kicking five goals.

The Swans have also had a 63-point win in 2022 and a 92-point win in 2021, dominating the Eagles over the past three seasons.

Not much was expected of West Coast this season and they have proved everyone right, losing by 50+ points in all three of their matches against Port, GWS and the Bulldogs, failing to cover the line in all three as well, obviously.

Early energy has been a positive for the Eagles, however, they have been unable to survive in matches after the first quarter.

Simple weight of possession has been the problem and as the game goes on mistakes begin to creep in, just as you would expect from an inexperienced side.

West Coast Team News

Coby Burgiel will be sidelined for at least  a month after an appendix operation.

Tyler Brockman will miss a week or two under concussion protocol. Dom Sheed and Jai Culley come off the injury list ahead of their returns in the WAFL this week.

Sydney suffered a demoralising 82-77 loss to Richmond last week that would have given them a hard reality check.

The Swans fumbled and bumbled the ball all day long through the hands and by foot, missing their clear targets and firing easy intercepts for the Richmond backline to pick off, claiming just 7 marks inside 50 all game, just over half of their season average.

Richmond beat the Swans on the ground, moving the ball through the hands and forcing missed tackles. John Longmire will need to address this issue heading into future with their opponents now marking this as a real weakness for Sydney.

Sydney Team News

Dane Rampe will be out for up to a month with a hamstring injury, while Harry Cunningham will have to get through concussion protocol to see if he is available.

Jack Buller will be in the mix for selection this week, while Taylor Adams could also make his AFL debut if his knee gets through training this week without any further damage.
