The Dockers were unlucky in their Gather Round loss to the Crows and were just edged out in their Round 5 loss to Port Adelaide but there are many positives that the team would have taken from their two games in Adelaide. Fremantle have surprised many experts this year with their on-field success despite key players sustaining major injuries shuffling up the playing roster.

What has surprised most is their newfound scoring prowess with Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy leading the way from the front well beyond their years and experience. The Dockers defence which we have all come to know is still there with the forward pressure and lock down tactics from the midfield restricting their oppositions ability to move the ball at will.

For the Eagles this is a time to rebuild and they have one of the best building blocks of the last decade in Harley Reid. The big on-baller has impressed in his first month of footy and will only get better as time goes on. The veterans have also started to step up recently with Tim Kelly and Elliot Yeo playing key roles in the development of the younger stars as well as contributing themselves on the stats sheet.

This game though will be one sided with West Coast not having much in way of attack to break down the Dockers structured defence. The last game between these two ended with a 101 point margin and i am tipping it to again be a bloodbath with Freo winning by 40+

  • Fremantle lead the AFL in Rebound 50 rate at 83% with West Coast ranking 16th
  • The Dockers Handball Efficiency is a league best 84.5%
  • West Coast allow their opponents 229.2 Uncontested Possessions per game, the 2nd most of any team in the AFL
  • Caleb Serong averages 30 Disposals over his last 5 games against the Eagles

Head to Head

The Western Derby is a fixture that everyone looks forward to even if the games have been one sided for a number of years. For almost 15 years this derby has been lopsided either one way or the other. Fremantle are currently on a 5 game win streak against West Coast stretching back to Round 22 of 2021. Prior to that the Eagles had a win streak of their own going 11 from 11 with the Dockers not winning a game between Round 20 in 2015 and Round 7 of 2021.

Such is the fate of two teams from the West that are on different trajectories. In the two games played last season the Dockers won by 41 and 101 points covering the line as favourites in both games with the Game Totals going Over.

West Coast secured their first win of the season last weekend against the Tigers. After big losses in their first 3 games of the year they were able to show some resemblance of a football team in Round 4 against the Swans, losing by only 26 points.

They then carried the momentum into last weeks matchup with Richmond and after a slow start allowing the Tigers to get out to a 27-1 lead they kicked 3 goals to finish the 1st quarter then never looked back.

Tim Kelly and Elliot Yeo showed their veteran prowess gaining 29 and 27 disposals respectively whilst number 1 draft pick Harley Reid picked up a goal and 27 touches himself earning a rising star nomination.

The Dockers were once again pipped at the death last weekend in Adelaide against Port. Fremantle started the game in a dominant fashion kicking the first goal of the game but could not break away from the Port Adelaide attack. The game went back and forth through all four quarters but it was late in the final term when Port Adelaide ramped up their pressure (243 to 159) that they managed to get on top of the Dockers.

Alex Pearce had a career game at the back against Charlie Dixon but ultimately could not contain the power forward who kicked two defining goals in the game to secure victory.

The Dockers won the clearances thanks to some hard rucking by Luke Jackson and Josh Treacy and will now look to improve on the already solid numbers with Sean Darcy back in the fold.

The Dockers won by 101 points last year and that was before their scoring potential was unleashed like it has been this year. I expect the Eagles to score but Freo will take the win and put a sizeable margin on their Western Derby opponents.
