Once a marquee game in the football calendar, Sydney take on Hawthorn at the SCG in round eight.

Both teams have been struggling in recent weeks, which means it should be a desperate game of football with both teams trying to seize an opportunity to get a much-needed win.

Sydney Form & Team News

The Swans have been very poor over the last month of football, losing four in a row and only scoring over fifty once, which makes for terrible viewing for their fans and neutrals alike.

Jake LIoyd has been their best player over the last month, but even he hasn’t been very damaging with the ball spending most of the time in the Swans defensive half.

On the team front, Sydney get Sam Reid and Lewis Mellican back from injury which are fantastic ins considering their key stocks have been depleted. All of Colin O’Riordan, George Hewett, and Will Hayward were very sore last week and it’s unknown whether they will get up this weekend.

The Sydney team for Saturday can be found below:

B: Lloyd, Rampe, Clarke
HB: Fox, Aliir, Mills
C: Bell, Parker, Cunningham
HF: Dawson, McCartin, L.Taylor
F: E.Taylor, Reid, Papley
FOLL: Sinclair, Rowbottom, Florent
I/C: Stephens, Gray, Blakey, Ling

Hawthorn Form & Team News

Much like the Swans, the Hawks have been incredibly disappointing in the last few weeks. They haven’t been able to score over 50 in any of their last three matches and have been treated with utter contempt from their opposition.

James Sicily and Blake Hardwick are doing a stellar job in defence considering how often the ball is down there, and Chad Wingard has been very good pushing through the midfield and forward line. Apart from that, they have all been relatively disappointing.

It is interesting to see what the Hawks do at selection, with Jarman Impey and Jack Scrimshaw both returning from injury and looking likely to return. Tim O’Brien will go out in another cruel blow to the Hawks key forward stocks.

The Hawthorn team for Saturday can be found below:

B: Hardwick, Frawley, Sicily
HB: Day, Frost, Scrimshaw
C: Scully, O’Meara, Smith
HF: Gunston, Brooksby, Wingard
F: Minchington, Lewis, Morrison
FOLL: McEvoy, Worpel, Mitchell
I/C: Burgoyne, Stratton, Shiels, Morris

Sydney vs Hawthorn Head to Head

The competition between these two teams has been evident by a series of close finishes in recent years, with the biggest winning margin in their last five encounters being 21 points.

Hawthorn have won three of their past five games against the Swans, and we expect another close match on Saturday.

Sydney vs Hawthorn Betting Odds

Hawthorn has been installed as favourites for this clash at $1.68 with Sydney the outsiders at $2.20.

The line has been set at -6.5 for the Hawks.

Sydney vs Hawthorn Match Up

The battle of the midfields will decide this game, specfically the match up of George Hewett and Tom Mitchell.

Hewett is a defensive midfielder who is used for plenty of tagging jobs, and he is expected to go to the Brownlow Medallists Tom Mitchell in order to curb his influence.

Mitchell has been poor this season, coming off a broken leg, which has coincided with the Hawks drop in form this season. Hewett will aim to keep him quiet again and if he is successful, it will go a long way to the Swans winning the game, as the rest of the Hawthorn midfield has been struggling in recent weeks.
