St Kilda vs Western Bulldogs, Round 6 2024 - Expert Prediction

St. Kilda are once again showing that they are one of the best defensive teams in the AFL this season and they will be rewarded this week for their efforts in the back-third with a win over the Western Bulldogs who are yet to find their bark in 2024.

The Saints were a whisker away from upsetting GWS last weekend on the back of an outstanding defensive display reducing the Giants to just 32 points in the second half and just 10 in the final term, falling just 1-point short of a comeback. The 80 points they conceded inCanberra against the GWS gives them a yearly average of just 73.2 points against per game which is good for fourth-best in the league, despite sitting 12th on the ladder.

The Western Bulldogs looked ok early against Essendon, but couldn’t compete in the final stages of the game with their midfield getting dominated by the Bombers with the Doggies looking even more stale at the stoppages.

From what we have seen from the Western Bulldogs this season there is no real indication that they will be contending this year unless there are some vast changes. The Saints will be sniffing around again and will put their trademark stranglehold on the Bulldogs in this game with their defence being their winning-factor once again.

The game total is super-low at 160.5 so I am liking the option of the Under on the Bulldogs Team Total instead which is set at 78.5 points.

  • St. Kilda has won 4 of the past 6 games against the Western Bulldogs.
  • The Saints have conceded 80 points or less in all 5 games this season.
  • All five St. Kilda matches have ended with a 1-39 winning margin.

Head to Head

St. Kilda took a 51-point win against the Western Bulldogs in round 2, 2023, taking a 25-1 point lead into the first break. The Bulldogs fought back in the second, bringing the margin back within a goal but the Saints took back control in the third and pulled away.

The win was St. Kilda first in three games, however, they do hold the better record in recent years beating the Western Bulldogs in four of their past six meetings.

The Saints put in one of the performances of the round, going down to league leaders the Greater Western Sydney by a single point after erasing a 35-point in the final term kicking the last six goals of the game, with a final result of 80-79 to the Giants.

St. Kilda can be proud of their effort despite the loss, restricting the GWS to just 80 points in the game which is the first time a team has held them under 100 points this season.

It does hand the Saints their third loss of the season though, however, they do have a couple of lighter games on the horizon but it will be essential that they get a win in round 6, with Port Adelaide next week which could potential see them start the season with a 2-5 record if they don’t get it right against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs suffered their second consecutive loss after getting thumped by Essendon by 29 points with the Bombers kicking 5 goals in the final term to pull them long out of reach for the Doggies. A 3.3 effort from 50-gamer Jamarra Ugle-Hagan wasn’t enough for the Western Bulldogs who will rue missed opportunities, especially late in the game under fatigue, where Essendon proved the fitter and more focused side.

The loss gave the Bulldogs a 2-3 record to start the 2024 season with the media and the fans questioning the intent of the team already with a lot of early movement in the lineup on a weekly basis.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan will miss the contest due to personal reason and is replaced by Rory Lobb.
Tom Liberatore is under concussion protocols and will miss the match with Riley Garcia and James Harmes coming in.
