Richmond Tigers vs Sydney Swans Tips

Sydney are tipped to continue their perfect start to the 2024 season by marking their stamp on the competition with a first 40+ win of the season.

Sydney have looked the goods and are showing that they have the perfect blend of young energy and experience that can keep them in the top-four all season long. The move to bring in ruckman Brodie Grundy has been a success and Isaac Heeney and Errol Gulden are flourishing in the middle.

Richmond have been doing it tough and will need to work they way up from the bottom this season, which is going to be a real tough task. The Tigers are in a new phase and we need to focus on the build in the long-term not the short.

The Swans' middle will be too slick for the Tigers and they will want to get out to a fast start and then control the ball, unlike how they played against Essendon last week. I like the first quarter total of Sydney over 24.5 points, which they eventually surpassed against the Bombers after their slow start.

Richmond will not be able to keep pace with Sydney and they will fly away in the third and fourth quarters, pushing the total over 40+ points.

As mentioned, the middle is where this will be won and the Swans will have the hands on the ball most often. Isaac Heeney has been everywhere and has had over 25 disposals in all three matches this season so lock in the 27-year-old for 25+ again against the Tigers.

  • The Swans have won 3 of the past 4 games against Richmond.
  • The Swans are averaging 52 more disposals per game than Richmond.
  • Sydney average 19.4 more tackles than the the Tigers.
  • Isaac Heeney averages 29 disposals this season.

Head to Head

Sydney got a 44-point victory over the Swans in round 5 with Tom Papley kicking six goals, Richmond got their revenge in round 17 with a 88-75 win in a tough tussle.

Sydney had won three games in a row against Richmond before their round 17 defeat last season, with two of those wins by 40+ points.

Richmond Tigers Form

Richmond started the season as many expected with a 0-3 record, losing to the Suns, Blues and Power. They have looked good in patches in all three matches, but have not been able to keep it together for the full four quarters.

They are missing the experience that they have had over the past generation and need to accept now that their mini-rebuild is underway.

Ruckman Toby Nankervis has been great in the middle for the Tigers with 18 disposals and 7.5 clearances per game.

Richmond Tigers Team News

James Trezise will be out for up to six weeks with the ruckman suffering an ankle injury. Jacob Hopper will also be out for six weeks with a knee injury.

Nathan Broad and Tyler Young have cleared their tests and have been included this week.

Sydney Swans Form

The Swannies are the team to beat for mine, along with their rival GWS. They got up for their first two big contests of the year beating Melbourne 86-64 in opening round and then dominated Collingwood 102-69 in round 1.

Their performance against Essendon in round 2 wasn’t as clean but they put up 131 points, but the effort wasn’t there in defence as it was in their opening two games, but it didn’t have to be either.

Isaac Heeney has started the year in Brownlow form, averaging 29 disposals and 8.3 clearances per game and has kicked four goals. Chad Warner, Tom Papley and Lagan McDonald have all kicked 6 goals, which proves their depth up front is hard to defend.

Sydney Swans Team News

Harry Cunningham suffered a gruesome concussion against Essendon and will miss this week despite recovering well.

Robbie Fox passed the test on his injured calf and will play from the interchange.
