Richmond vs Brisbane Preview, Predictions & Betting

Round 23's match of the week sees the Tigers host the Lions in what could be an early Grand Final preview.

Richmond is the flag favourite after such a gritty performance last week against the Eagles. After conceding seven goals in the opening quarter the Tigers clawed their way back in arguably the match of the year.

The Lions are on top of the ladder after beating the Cats by a point last week, but are still underrated as genuine flag contenders.

I am expecting a close match here, but we will be backing Richmond to beat the Lions at $1.40 via BetEasy.

Richmond Team News

It was a courageous performance last week against the Eagles here, with Jack Riewoldt kicking the goal in the final minutes to win them the game.

Dustin Martin is a certainty for the three votes after picking up 36 vital disposals as well as a goal. Gun forward Tom Lynch was their main target when heading inside 50, kicking three goals of his own as well as 17 disposals.

Trent Cotchin is the Tigers big name in this week. The captain's inclusion will only strengthen Tigers midfield and possibly unleash Dusty down forward which is so dangerous against any side.

The Tigers are $1.40 via BetEasy to beat the Lions this week and we will be taking those odds.

Brisbane Team News

The Lions were as big as they have ever been this week, winning last week’s game after looking down and out with six minutes to go. They have shown fight and will need to play even better to beat the Tigers with the versatile crowd this week.

Charlie Cameron is the man of the moment, after kicking five of his side's ten goals last week, almost single-handedly winning the game for the Lions.. Lachie Neale was brilliant as usual kicking one of the cleanest and confident goals I have seen this season.

Allen Christensen is the out this week after an injury during the game last week. Lewis Taylor and Rhys Mathieson both played well in the NEAFL and look the likely targets to put as Christensen’s replacement.

The Lions are $2.95 outsiders via BetEasy in this game. A win will not surprise but a loss to end their win streak is probably expected.

Richmond vs Brisbane Head To Head

Richmond have won their last five encounters, embarrassing the Lions at the ‘G’ last year, keeping them to two goals for the entire game.

Dustin Martin kicked six as well as earned the three Brownlow votes and may well do so again if Dusty can escape from the leash.

Richmond vs Brisbane Match Up

Tom Lynch squaring off against Harris Andrews is the one we are all excited for here.

Andrews is in All Australian form, as is Tom Lynch who is coming into his own now at the Tigers.

I would bank on Andrews doing a number on Lynch, but that is when Martin will be down forward kicking their goals which is not what the Lions want.

Richmond vs Brisbane Key Statistics

  • Richmond has won their past five games against the Lions
  • Richmond has won 87 per cent of games as favourite this season
  • Richmond has won 83 per cent of games at the MCG this season
  • Lachie Neale has recorded 35 or more disposals in his last three appearances against Richmond

Verdict

Richmond rarely lose at the MCG, but the Lions are the real deal in 2019 so we will be backing the Tigers to win and not taking on any lines.

This looms as a showcase match for the Lions to see what they're made of, and while they won't win, we're expecting Lachie Neale to lead the way for his side.
