Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Predictions

The traditional AFL Round 1 curtain-raiser sees reigning champions Richmond Tigers take on rivals Carlton.

It's eight years since Carlton last beat Richmond Tigers and they have been on the receiving end of some heavy defeats. Another Tigers success is predicted with Richmond at near full strength and the Blues missing key names.

  • Richmond Tigers have won back-to-back premierships.
  • Richmond Tigers have won 10 of their last 11 matches (including Community Series).
  • Richmond Tigers have won their last 10 matches against Carlton.
  • Richmond Tigers have won by 24 or more points in 8 of their last 9 wins over Carlton.
  • Carlton have lost 5 of their last 6 matches (including Community Series).

Richmond Tigers have dominated their traditional rivals in recent times, winning the last 10 meetings since 2013.

All but one of those wins have been by double-figure point margins. That includes Round 1 last year, when the Tigers were 24-point winners.

Richmond Tigers made it back-to-back premierships when defeating Geelong Cats 81-50 in the Grand Final at the Gabba in October.

The defending champions lost to Brisbane Lions in the qualifying final, but didn't look back. They beat St Kilda, Port Adelaide and Geelong in the big dance to win a third premiership in four years.

In the build up to the new season, Damien Hardwick's champions beat Collingwood 80-74 in the Community Series.

Carlton Form

Carlton missed out a first finals appearance since 2013 when they finished 10th after a disappointing end to the 2020 season.

The Blues won seven times to continue improvement under David Teague, but will perhaps be kicking themselves after losing four of their last five matches of the campaign.

With the finals in sight, Carlton lost to Collingwood, GWS Giants, wooden spoonists Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions. There only win in the last month came against Sydney Swans.

In the Community Series pre-season fixtures, the Blues were well beaten by St Kilda as they went down 125-99.
