I think we can all agree that we want to see North Melbourne rise from the cellar, however, it is hard to see that it is going to happen this season. Defensive combinations are going to need to be set and developed which will take time and hinder the Kangaroos from moving any further up the ladder than they were in 2023.

What’s to like

The North Melbourne slump has dragged on now for four years, however, there were positive signs offensively last season that saw their points for average increase by almost 2 goals per game and their percentage jump from 55.8 in 2022 up to 71.5 in 2023. The improvement had a lot to do with Nick Larkey up front kicking 29 more goals than his previous best season, ending 2023 with 71 goals.

What’s NOT to like

As positive as the Kangaroos attack was, the defence was just as disappointing averaging a smidge over 100 points against.

In 2024, their back-third is even more vulnerable with the departure of Ben McKy and the ACL injury to Griffin Logue. There are a few different tactics to combat the inexperience in the backline for the Kangaroos and there will be a long and most likely painful process until they can settle things down and find the right option.
