North Melbourne vs Carlton Tips

Carlton should stay perfect and put up a big score against North Melbourne and hand the Kangaroos their third consecutive loss to start the season.

This game is more about the Kangaroos than the Blues when it comes to making my picks. North Melbourne has not started the year well and even had a chance to get a victory last week with a 35-point lead against Freo, but threw it away and lost by 26 themselves.

Confidence isn’t there yet for the Kangaroos and it will go from bad to worse against Carlton this week, who are fresh coming off a bye. The Blues haven’t been that impressive to start the season, in my opinion, despite them being 2-0. Their win against Brisbane was a lot on the Lions and they should never have been in a hole twice against Richmond if they want to call themselves premiership contenders in 2024.

I am going to give the Blues the benefit of the doubt this week but have avoided the margin on purpose because you can’t trust that they will play for four quarters and cover such a line. I am banking on the poor defence of the Kangaroos to see the Blues hit their overs in the team total and the game total, but expect North Melbourne to also contribute there.

Charlie Curnow loves these games against poor defensive backs and will dominate in the forward line and kick at least 4 goals.

  • Carlton has scored 107 and 114 points in their previous two games against North Melbourne.
  • North Melbourne has conceded 100+ points in both games this season and 12 times last season.
  • The last 5 games between North Melbourne and Carlton have gone over the game total
  • Charlie Curnow has kicked 9 goals in his last 2 games against North Melbourne.

Head to Head

Carlton got a 23-point win against North Melbourne in round 4 last season with the game neck and neck until midway through the third quarter when Carlton began to give themselves some space. The Blues also won their matchup in 2022 by 50 points in round 7.

The Blues have also won the head to head battle 3-2 in the past 5 seasons.

North Melbourne Form

North Melbourne has started their season off the way they played in 2023, losing the first two matches of the year while conceding 100+ points in both contests against GWS (121-82) and Freo last week (102-76).

The Kangaroos started off flawlessly against the Dockers but let a 35-point lead slip away quickly in the final 10 minutes of the half and the opening half of the third term.

It magnified the inexperience in the squad and also the lack of skill and ability to hold to the game plan and adapt as things start to get a little hairy.

Carlton Form

Carlton started the year on the right side of two thrillers in opening round and round 1, coming back from a 46-point deficit against Brisbane to claim a 86-85 victory at the Gabba. The Blues then did it tough against Richmond erasing a 9-point lead in the third quarter to beat the tiger 86-81.

Attitude and commitment to their goal are definitely there and your hat need to be taken off to Carlton who find a way to win the tight one, but for me they should not have to do it time and time again as they did in 2023.

If the Blues are serious about winning the premiership they are going to need to put together four quarters and avoid bringing out the shovel each game and stop climbing out of the grave they dig.

Carlton Team News

Jacob Weitering (calf), Caleb Marchbank (illness) and Jesse Motlop (toe) all expected to be available for selection this week.

Sam Walsh is back at full training next week and is expected back in a couple of weeks.
