Footy mania continues on Thursday night as the Demons play the Power at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Melbourne brings in strong form lines after winning two of its last three and only narrowly going down to Brisbane last week in a thriller. Conversely the Power need to get back to winning ways after a disappointing home loss to St Kilda.

Will Port maintain their position on top of the ladder or will Melbourne roar back into finals contention?

Melbourne Form & Team News

Melbourne started off its season terribly, winning just one game from its opening four, but after gritty wins against the Gold Coast and Hawthorn they are right back into finals contention.

The Dees' effort last week against the second-placed Brisbane Lions had plenty of merit and if they can play like that consistently, the finals don’t seem as far away as it did a couple of months ago for the Melbourne faithful.

On the selection front, Tom McDonald looks likely to come back into the side after an eye injury, which might see youngster Luke Jackson might find himself out of the side.

Nathan Jones and James Harmes have been disappointing lately and it wouldn’t shock to see one of those two out of the side.

Port Adelaide Form & Team News

Port Adelaide find themselves on top of the ladder after eight games and in a striking position to give the 2020 Premiership a real shake, considering the shortened season means there is only nine games left to play.

The Power won their first four matches which put them in such a good position, however they have struck a lull in the past fortnight. They were relatively poor against Carlton a fortnight ago, before being easily accounted for by St Kilda last week.

It will be interesting to see what Ken Hinkley does at the selection table. With Scott Lycett still unavailable, Peter Ladhams should hold his spot. Todd Marshall will go out of the side after suffering a thumb injury.

Riley Bonner and Justin Westhoff are another two who must be testing the patience of Ken Hinkley after having a poor few weeks of football.

Melbourne vs Port Adelaide Match Up

The battle of the big men holds the key to this contest.

Max Gawn is the best ruckman in the competition at the moment and the young Power player Peter Ladhams is going to have his work cut out to stop him.

Gawn is a major contender for the Brownlow Medal this season and he has been terrific this season in almost every game he has played. Ladham's has been a project player for Port but Thursday night he needs to step up and prove he can match it with the best in the competition.

Verdict

The Demons are the outsiders in the market but represent great value in a winnable match up. Melbourne has finally hit its straps after a lacklustre beginning to the season, which spells trouble for a Port Adelaide side who struggled to match St Kilda's intensity last week.
