Hawthorn vs Essendon Bombers Tips

Concluding Round 14 of the 2021 AFL season will be the Sunday afternoon clash between Hawthorn and Essendon, two traditional rivals and a fixture that's always hotly contested irrespective of ladder positions.

The Hawks went to work over the bye and produced easily their best performance of the year last week when defeating the Swans at the SCG, keeping Sydney to seven goals in a 38 point victory.

Essendon had the week off in Round 13 with their last performance being a 39-point defeat at the hands of Richmond, a losing margin that did blow out late.

Goals are predicted over 25.5 the best bet in this clash.

  • Seven of the last 8 head to heads have gone over the total match points line
  • There was 27 goals in the match when the sides met in Round 1 this season
  • Essendon rank third in the AFL for points per game in season 2021
  • Essendon's Jake Stringer has kicked 3+ goals in 4 of his 8 games this season

Head to Head

From their last 10 clashes, it is 6-4 in favour of Hawthorn.

Hawthorn defeated Essendon by one point in Round 1 this year, which was the last time these two sides met.

Hawthorn Form

The Hawks were in poor form heading into their bye round.

They were firmly in wooden spoon contention after handing North Melbourne their first victory of the season, and a few egos would've been dented at what is the most successful club of the modern era.

With reportedly some heated training sessions in their week off, Hawthorn rediscovered their touch last week in what was a comfortable win over the Sydney Swans.

While the Bombers could trouble the Hawks with their quick ball movement, the young Essendon side do make their fair share of mistakes which could open the door for Hawthorn on Sunday.

James Worpel is suspended and Harry Morrison is ruled out with injury.

Essendon Bombers Form

Essendon are one the best teams to watch in the AFL at present with Ben Rutten allowing his side to take the game on and attack.

The season highlight came for the Bombers in Round 11 when upsetting the West Coast Eagles in Perth which completed three wins in a row.

Their Dreamtime clash with the Richmond Tigers was also played in the west and was closer than what the end margin of 39 points indicates.

The concern for the Bombers was the ease in which Richmond scored over the last 10 minutes of that clash. Freshened-up ahead of Sunday's fixture against the Hawks, they'll be looking to put a score on the board in Launceston.

Andrew McGrath, David Zaharakis and Alec Waterman are all injured, while Aaron Francis is managed and Patrick Ambrose is left out.

Verdict

With both sides being somewhat unpredictable, I'm concentrating on the  'Total Goals Markets' with over 25.5 goals looking very attainable.

Jake Stringer has kicked 3 or more goals in four of his eight games this season and without seemingly a logical match-up, he can hit the scoreboard on Sunday.
