Hawthorn and Essendon clash at Adelaide Oval on Thursday in what is expected to be the return of Joe Daniher

Daniher is the exact man that Essendon have needed this season to get some consistent form. He provides them that forward target that they desperately need, relinquishing the likes of Shaun McKernan (needs to come back into the side) or James Stewart to the smaller man.

Hawthorn have been poor this season, and although they were only just beaten by the best side in the competition last week, they are not providing us with finals footy which is what we have come to expect from the great club.

Hawthorn Form & Team News

Having lost seven of their last eight, the Hawks are not the team we know and are officially in a rebuild stage.

There does seem to be some issues within their midfield, although James Worpel returned to some of his true form from last year against Port Adelaide on the weekend.

Shaun Burgoyne is one of their best and hardest players, yet he is the oldest player in the competition and Hawthorn's most creative ball user James Sicily is out injured.

Jack Gunston and James Frawley are expected to return to the side which gives them a forward target and hard defender, but Isaac Smith and Jaeger O'Meara are expected to miss one more week.

Essendon Form & Team News

The Dons have been around the mark this season but have not been winning enough. With Daniher back in the side this week, this will make a monstrous difference to their forward line.

They have been playing Shaun McKernan and James Stewart as keys with Daniher and Jake Stringer out, but both of these men can play on the smaller men now with them back in the side.

Stringer was average at best last week but will be better with that hit out and will be sure to gather some confidence with big Daniher back in the side.

The big name last week was Irving Mosquito. He is a star and had the Bombers absolutely buzzing down forward. He is sure to keep his spot this week.

Hawthorn vs Essendon Head To Head

Hawthorn have won three of their last five encounters with the Dons, but were beaten in their encounter last year in June by almost 20 points.

With their injury list getting worse, and some big names playing for the Dons, it is hard to see them beating Essendon.

Hawthorn vs Essendon Betting Odds

Essendon have been installed as the favourites at $1.65 while Hawthorn are the $2.25 outsiders.

The line has been set for Essendon at -4.5 which does look value.

Hawthorn vs Essendon Match Up

The key match up will be between Sam Frost and Joe Daniher.

Daniher at his best is one of the strongest forwards in the competition, but Frost is a hard nut defender and still has a ton of class with ball in hand.

It is hard to see Daniher having a blinder at his first game back, but if he can beat Frost in the air when the ball comes forward, they are going to be hard to stop.

Hawthorn do have a strong game off the half-back line, so this match up is ultra important to them winning this match.

Hawthorn vs Essendon Key Stats
