GWS Giants vs Hawthorn Tips

GWS Giants and Hawthorn contest the opening Sunday fixture in Round 15.

Following an upset victory over the Swans, Hawthorn just lacked that killer blow against the Bombers last Sunday although they were still very competitve.

The Giants needed to respond last Saturday against Carlton and they did so emphatically, recording a 36 point win over the Blues. They are tipped to go back-to-back and boost finals hopes.

  • GWS Giants rank top 5 in the AFL for kicks per game and clearances per game this season
  • Hawthorn have lost nine of their last 10 day matches
  • Hawthorn rank top 2 in the AFL for rebound 50's per game and handballs per game this season

Head to Head

From their last 10 clashes, Hawthorn lead the head to head battle 5-4 over the Giants with the other clash being a draw back in 2017.

GWS defeated Hawthorn by 34 points in Round 5, 2020 which was the last game between these two sides.

GWS Giants Form

The Giants were building quite well and they should have beaten Richmond Tigers prior to rolling West Coast Eagles, two of the more talented sides in the competition.

Following a loss to Brisbane Lions and then a draw with North Melbourne, they simply had to win in Round 14 to boost finals hopes.

The Giants rose to the occasion last week against Carlton, breaking the 100 point barrier in the process in a dominant win.

The equation is similar this Sunday for GWS in that they need to defeat the Hawks to keep their finals hopes alive. With a more polished 22 across the board, they should be winning this with a repeat of last Saturday's effort.

GWS Giants Team News

Small pressure forward Brent Daniels returns for the Giants this Sunday.

Hawthorn Form

Hawthorn responded from their bye week with an upset win over the Sydney Swans, which boosted hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon.

The Hawks had more scoring shots than the Essendon Bombers last Sunday, but they just lacked that bit of class in the big moments in an 86-73 loss.

Alastair Clarkson's men will be looking to set the tone by slowing down the Giants ball movement early then cash in on the turnovers and if their pressure isn't up to scratch, GWS will open them up.

Hawthorn Team News

Hawthorn have some handy inclusions for Round 15 with highly rated youngster Denver Grainger-Baras returning along with midfielder James Worpel and lock-down defender Kyle Hartigan.
