Geelong vs Collingwood Preview, Predictions & Tips

It's first against fourth on Friday night as the top of the table Cats play the Magpies at the MCG.

Geelong finished the season as minor premiers while Collingwood snuck into the fourth position after a number of final round matches went their way.

Geelong has had the more consistent year, with Collingwood battling injuries and suspensions thoughout. It bodes well for a strong Friday night showing from the Cats.

We will be backing Geelong to win by 1-39 points via BetEasy at $2.20.

Geelong Form

Geelong ended the season with an 11 goal thrashing of Carlton at GMHBA stadium where Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Dangerfield made the game his own. He picked up 34 disposals as well as four goals.

The key to Geelong winning is Tom Hawkins. The Tomahawk provides a presence up forward and can hit the scoreboard and distribute goal assists, a rare talent from a big man.

Geelong are the favourites via BetEasy at $1.78 but we will be backing them to win by the margin of 1-39 points at $2.20.

Collingwood Form

The Pies are a dangerous side but there are a few concerns heading into Friday.

Three big names will all return to the side in Steele Sidebottom, Jaidyn Stephenson and Jordan De Goey.

Stephenson and De Goey will return off the back of extended breaks, so there'll be questions as to whether they'll be able to run out the game.

They beat Essendon unconvincingly by 11 points in the last round with All Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy starring with 35 hitouts and 33 disposals. Grundy can rove his own hitouts, kick goals and gain metres which is a skillset few ruckman possess.

Geelong vs Collingwood Head To Head

Two of their last three matches have gone the way of Geelong by slender margins.

Their last encounter was round one this year with Geelong taking it out by seven points at the MCG.

Geelong vs Collingwood Match Up

Tom Hawkins and Jordan Roughead is the key to this contest.

If Hawkins can kick a few goals early he will be hard to quell. If Roughead can gain the upper hand it will be hard to see Geelong kicking a winning score.

This is the match up that will decide the final.

Geelong vs Collingwood Key Statistics

  • Geelong has won 75 per cent of matches as favourite this season
  • Geelong have won 80 per cent of its matches at the MCG this season
  • Jaidyn Stephenson has kicked the first goal in three of his matches this season

We will be backing Geelong to win the game by 1-39 points, but a close game is expected.

Jaidyn Stephenson will be out to make amends for the last 10 weeks, so we will back him at the great value of $14 to kick the first goal.

Ultimately the Cats will be too tough on Friday and will be the first team through to a preliminary final in 2019.

Winning Margin: Geelong by 1-39 @2.20 at Beteasy - 12 Units
First Goal Scorer: Jaidyn Stephenson @14.00 at Ladbrokes - 3 Units
