Geelong Cats vs Richmond Tigers Preview

Geelong look set to hand Richmond a hefty loss when the two sides clash at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday in AFL Round 17.

The Cats were left licking their wounds in Round 15 when going down to the Brisbane Lions by 41-points, a margin that could have been less, were it not for some inaccuracy in front of goal.

The perennial finalists have had the bye since then and sit in 4th position on the ladder with a win-loss record of 10-5.

The 3-12 Tigers are 17th and were no match for 3rd placed Adelaide last weekend, going down by 68 points to the Crows at the MCG.

With Geelong’s scoring ability combined with the form of thier big guns in the middle in Bailey Smith and Max Holmes, this could get ugly pretty quickly for a young Tigers side that are lacking depth around the ground.

Take the home side to cover the massive line. Expect Jeremny Cameron to have another day out. Max Holmes looks set for a high disposal game.

  • Geelong have won five of their past six matches
  • The Cats were 95-point winners the last time they played a side in the bottom half of the ladder.
  • Richmond have lost their last two by 68 points or more
  • Jeremy Cameron has kicked 28 goals in his past six matches

Head to Head

Geelong have won four of the past five matches between the two sides. The Cats were 30 point winners at GMHBA Stadium last season in Round 13.

Oliver Dempsey booted three goals for the winners and had 27 disposals. Jack Bowes and Max Holmes both had 29 disposals for the Cats.

Geelong Cats Form Analysis

Geelong have won five of their past six and were 95-point winners over Essendon prior to the loss against Brisbane. They have won their past three games against sides outside the top eight by margins of 39.5 or above.

Geelong have kicked over 100 points in six of their past eight matches. Poor conditions prevented them in a low scoring affair against Gold Coast, wile they were inaccurate against Brisbane, booting 6.15.

Jeremy Cameron has kicked 28 goals in his past six matches. Bailey Smith has been instrumental further up the ground, averaging 32 disposals in his past five matches, while Max Holmes has averaged 26 in that period.

Geelong Cats Team News

Cam Guthrie is a chance to return from injury for Geelong. Jack Bowes and Ted Clohesy have some solid VFL form and will be considered.

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

Richmond produced some promising performances in the first half of the season but have lost their past six with the past three of those coming by margins grater than 39.5 points. They were by 44 points against Sydney and 79 against the Bulldogs, prior to the hefty loss against Adelaide last weekend.

They have found it hard to win the footy in the past five rounds and rank in the bottom couple of sides for disposals, clearances and inside 50s. Tim Taranto has had 25+ disposals in seven of his past 11 but was down in usual form last week with 19. Dion Prestia had 29 disposals against Adelaide, while Jacob Hoppper had 28.

The lack of ball winning ability has not produced enough supply up forward and the Tigers have averaged just 54 points per game in their past five matches. The loss of Tom Lynch will hurt. Last week’s debutant, Jasper Alger, was the only multiple goalkicker with two majors last weekend.

Richmond Tigers Team News

Tom Lynch has been suspended for a strike against Adelaide last weekend, while Mykelti Lefau came off with a calf issue and is in doubt. Taj Hotton is a chance to make his debut, while the former NBL player, Oliver Hayes-Brown is a sneaky chance to also make his debut after a dominant match at VFL level last weekend.

Verdict

Geelong to cover the massive line. Cameron to kick a bag, Holmes to find plenty of footy.
