Eddie McGuire says AFL return announcement 'won't happen today'

Collingwood President Eddie McGuire has dashed the hopes of footy fans everywhere this morning, declaring that the AFL won't be announcing its return to play plans on Monday.

A number of states across the country announced plans to ease COVID-19 isolation restrictions over the weekend following Friday's national cabinet meeting, but with Victorian Premier Dan Andrews yet to make a formal announcement on his state's plans, the AFL is left waiting until all states have declared their intentions.

Mr Andrews said he would wait to reveal new rules on Monday following the expiration of Victoria’s state of emergency.

McGuire told Melbourne radio station Triple M that an announcement "won't happen today", with the league hoping to gain clarity on what how aligned the states are across the board before making a public declaration.

"My understanding is that the AFL is going to get all the information from all the states … then distil it all down."

McGuire went on to say that even the clubs are unlikely to hear from AFL house on Monday, with the pathway towards a return to footy likely to be announced within the coming days.

"There's an AFL Commission meeting today, there are probably various meetings this afternoon with the various committees that need to happen and then in the next day or two the AFL will be able to come out and say, 'this is what we're doing'.

"So we can get past all these headlines about which day … we will know by Wednesday, probably by Tuesday, but we will know what's going on then."
