The defending premiers Collingwood have slowly made their way back into the top 8 and will consolidate that spot with a win over the Western Bulldogs this Friday.

Despite the Magpies having one of the longer injury lists in the AFL their squad has been able to hold a high standard of play especially through the middle and on the defensive end. With that said, both of these teams are having trouble with their Accuracy in front of Goal which together with injuries up front leads us to take the Under on the Game Total.

The expectation is that the game will be a tussle back and forth for the majority of the first half before the Pies kick into gear in the second half to keep the Dogs at bay.

  • Western Bulldogs are 9th and Collingwood 11th in the league in Accuracy (Goals per shot)
  • Three of the top four Goalscorers for Collingwood are out injured
  • The Bulldogs are 5th worst in the AFL for Opposition Rebound 50’s
  • Collingwood are 4th in the League for Intercept Possessions

Head to Head

These teams have met only 6 times since the beginning of the 2019 season with Collingwood holding a 4-2 advantage in the head to head.

The Magpies also have the most recent success winning the only matchup of the 2023 season 89-77 at Marvel in Round 17 last year.

The Western Bulldogs hold the Handicap advantage having covered the spread in 4 of the last 6 games.

The Game Total went Over in last year's game but before that the Under hit in 5 straight matchups. 4 of 6 games have finished with Winning Margins of 1-39 points.

Another draw for the defending Champs as they let a 25 point lead in the 4th quarter slip from their grasp against the Fremantle Dockers last weekend. The Pies are still undefeated since round 3 but have now two draws on the season which sees them sneak into the 8 ahead of the Dockers.

Collingwood are struggling with Accuracy in front of the sticks this season and sit at 11th in the AFL at 46.3% Goals/Shots.

Collingwood Team News

The Pies can’t take a trick on the injury front. With an already long list of players out a further few were added following the draw against Freo last weekend.

Mason Cox will miss up to 6 weeks with an MCL injury. Joe Richards fractured his foot and will miss a comparable amount of time. Brody Mihocek reinjured his hamstring that had previously kept him out of the team and is now expected to be sidelined for up to a month.

Jack Bytel could return in round 12 from concussion but Will Hoskin-Elliot and Josh Eyre are at least another week away.

The Bulldogs have had a topsy turvy month of footy. After losing to the Hawks they went on to demolish the Tigers and beat the Giants by 5 goals. Their win streak was halted last week as the league leading Swans wrestled the game away from the Dogs in the 3rd, holding the margin for the rest of the game.

Western Bulldogs top the league in Possessions per game and move the ball around well within their team with the 2nd highest number of Uncontested Possessions. They are though having trouble converting that into points with a below average Accuracy in front of goal.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Aaron Naughton injured his knee in the Dogs loss to Sydney, he is expected to miss up to 6 weeks. Ed Richards and Anthony Scott both sustained concussions and will be sidelined for this game. James O’Donnell is expected to return from an illness.

Verdict

With 3 of the top 4 Collingwood Goalscorers out I have trouble seeing there being a lot of goals kicked from a team already struggling with Accuracy. The Dogs aren't much better themselves infront of goal and with any low total the Winning Margin should be kept under 40. The tip is the Pies defence to win the game for them.
