Brisbane Lions vs Port Adelaide Tips

Interstate titans clash on Saturday at the Gabba. Both the Lions and the Power have found momentum of late and sit in the top 8, setting up in intriguing clash.

Port Adelaide are travelling the better at this stage of the season and the class of the away side can edge this one, particularly with Lachie Neale missing for Brisbane.

  • Brisbane Lions are 3-3 for the season.
  • Brisbane Lions have lost 2 of their last 3 home matches.
  • Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide have won 18 matches each with 2 draws in 38 clashes.
  • Port Adelaide are 5-1 for the season.
  • Port Adelaide have won their last 3 matches.

Head to Head

There has been nothing to split these two sides with 18 wins apiece and two draws.

The Lions do have a three-match winning streak against the Power, but it is Port Adelaide that are on an actual three-game winning streak going into Saturday.

Last year, the Lions beat the Power 85-48 in what was a first loss of last season for Port Adelaide.

Brisbane Lions Form

The Lions have won their last two matches to go 3-3 for the season, most recently 103-85 against the Carlton Blues away at Marvel Stadium last weekend.

After a slow start to the season, the Lions are now back in the top 8 having also beaten Essendon Bombers 102-45 in Round 5.

It is largely due to their tackling and contested disposal efficiency across the field that they have bounced back from a 1-3 start.

Often undervalued midfielders Jarryd Lyons and Daniel Rich will need to continue their outstanding form heading into Saturday’s matchup.

Brisbane Lions Team News

Brownlow Medalist Lachie Neale is out for this week’s clash which is an obvious huge loss. He faces an an estimated eight weeks on the sidelines.

Another out for the Lions is key defender Darcy Gardiner as he recovers from a concussion.

Callum Ah Chee shifted to defensive duties for the remainder of the Carlton game last week, but has been named in the centres.

Rhys Mathieson is recalled after standing out in last week’s VFL match, booting four goals. James Madden also comes in for the Lions.

Port Adelaide Form

Port Adelaide have won three games in a row and have only been beaten once this season.

Following wins over Richmond Tigers and Carlton, the Power were much too good at home to St Kilda last weekend in a 93-39 win to make it three in a row.

The Power find themselves dominating across the stat sheet including being in the top three for Marks, Disposals and Goals for the season so far.

Veteran Ollie Wines is currently averaging 31.5 disposals per game which is well above his career high.

Port Adelaide Team News

Travis Boak is ruled out with injury, with Sam Powell-Pepper called up after a terrific display in the SANFL last week with 34 disposals and a goal to his name.

Young guns Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters are both unlikely to return to the lineup for over a month.

Verdict

Both teams are in form and an incredible blockbuster looks in store at the Gabba. It's a coin flip game but despite this being played on home soil for the Lions, the Power have that edge across the board and can snatch a win.
