Adelaide vs Port Adelaide, Round 8 2024 - Expert Prediction

The Adelaide Crows dominated The Showdown in 2023, however, fortunes will change with Port taking back the command in the battle of who is best in the City of Churches.

Port may have to do it tough without their captain Connor Rozee, who may miss the match with a hamstring injury. But despite being short-handed in that respect, it is not going to help the Crows, who have been unable to prove that they can move the ball freely into their attacking-third and give their forward good service.

Port will hold the ball inside their forward 50 and will give themselves every chance to take full control of the match and will cover the tiny line of just 2.5 points as favourites. Charlie Dixon has been on point for Port and will have another multi-goal game against the Crows.

  • Port Adelaide have won their last 3 matches at Adelaide Oval, while the Crows are winless at the venue in 2024.
  • The Crows take 30% less marks inside 50 per game than the Power.
  • Port rank in the top-two in the AFL for Inside 50’s, Marks Inside 50 and Tackles Inside 50
  • Charlie Dixon averages 2 goals per game in 2024.

Head to Head

The Crows took both matches in The Showdown 2023, beating the Power by a comfortable margin in each contest.

The Crows won by 31 points in round 3 and backed it up again with a 47-point win in round 20. The Power had no answer for the Crows forward movement, conceding over 110 points in both matches.

Despite Adelaide taking 3 of the past 4 Showdowns, PPort hold a slight edge winning 5 of the past 9 games since 2019.

Adelaide finally got their attack to click this season, albeit against last-placed North Melbourne, however it was a decent score of 138-81, putting up over 100 points for the first time this season.  The points had everything to do with the space they found inside 50 recording 24 marks in the area which is a vast improvement on their season average of just 10.3 per game. The uncontested possessions (237) were well up on their season average of 214.6, which is more evidence that the Crows had free air on offer.

Despite their fine performance against the Kangas it is hard to have faith in the Crows, who have not had the same success inside 50 against any other club, besides a one-off big performance against Carlton when they got their first win of the season. Improvement is still needed and the ability to link the midfield with their forward line will need another run before they can be considered a top-eight contender again.

Adelaide Team News

Sam Berry (foot) and Brodie Smith (back) have recovered from their respective issues and are expected to be available for selection.

Port put in a warrior effort against St Kilda to hold off the Saints 82-72, despite only having 2 fit players on the bench for the final quarter. The win came at a huge cost for the Power, losing captain Connor Rozee, forward Sam Powell-Pepper and defender Aliir Aliir to injuries.

Port were inaccurate once again in front of goal adding to their second-worst Goal Accuracy statistic in the AFL, kicking 11.16 against St. Kilda, despite Charlie Dixon’s game-high 4.0 goal scoring effort.

Port Adelaide have been arguably the best team in the AFL creating forward pressure, leading the league in Inside 50’s while ranking second in Marks Inside 50 and Tackles Inside 50.

Port Adelaide Team News

Sam Powell-Pepper will miss the rest of 2024 with an ACL injury which he suffered in the Power’s win against the Saints.

Captain Connor Rozee will be assessed later in the week after leaving the Power’s round 7 match with a low-grade hamstring strain. Defender Aliir Aliir will miss The Showdown under concussion protocol.
