Both teams are coming off unexpected wins last round with Adelaide taking a 2 point win over the Blues whilst Essendon upset the Dogs, winning by 29. The Crows have had a very tough start to the season with expectations being very high on the back of a lackluster 2023 campaign. They have been there or thereabouts in their first 4 games this year and managed to crack out their first win against a Carlton team who have become synonymous with close finishes.

Essendon were predicted to lose by a margin to the Doggies last weekend but a solid 3rd quarter showing helped them to put a buffer on the scoreboard which they were able to extend through the majority of the final term. The Bombers now sit outside the 8 at 9th only behind the Suns and Dockers on percentage.

Despite Essendon having won two more games than Adelaide the difference in opponent strength has been stark. Adelaide have managed to both score points and play well defensively against teams that all currently sit within the top 8. The Bombers on the other hand have allowed inferior teams to post big numbers and it is that which dictates our tip this week siding with the Crows.

  • Adelaide lead the league in Hit Outs averaging 45.8 per game
  • Essendon are 3rd worst in the league at allowing their opponents to Hit Out to advantage at 34.4%
  • The Bombers allow the 4th most Inside 50’s on average to their opponents giving up 56 per game
  • Adelaide allow only 51.2 Inside 50’s per game to opponents, the 3rd best number in the AFL

Head to Head

Essendon dominate the Head to Head numbers since the beginning of the 2019 season winning all 5 games played. The last Crows win came in rd21 of the 2017 season.

4 of the last 5 games have all finished with margins of 21 points or less with only one blowout of 63 points in the last 5 years. 3 of the last 5 games have gone Over the Game Total including the last two in a row.

The Crows record is not an accurate display of their game play so far this year. When things click in to gear they will upset some top tier teams as they possess the attacking prowess and defensive ability to be annoying.

Adelaide were able to greatly increase their Inside 50 efficiency in the win over Carlton hitting 51% on the game compared to their season average of 40.1%. They had 8 less scoring shots than Carlton kicking 16 goals to only 4 behinds.

Essendon were once again accurate in front of goal in their win over the Western Bulldogs. Kicking 15.6 in the game they are now 63.39 on the season showing that when they get the opportunity they take it by the scruff of the neck.

The Bombers will need to focus on their defensive structure heading into this game with the team allowing an average of 13 goals to their opposition per game despite playing inferior teams over the first month of competition.

Verdict

Essendon and Adelaide are fairly evenly matched but i believe more in the Crows defence than the Bombers. Based on opposing teams so far this season Adelaide have arguably played better and should edge out Essendon in this one with a Little Win.
