Here is everything you need to know for the 2024 AFL Finals:

When do AFL Finals start?

The AFL instituted a bye week prior to finals a few years back so all teams will get a rest before Week 1 of the Finals gets underway on Thursday 5th September.

The Semi-Finals take place a week later generally taking place on a Friday and Saturday night 13th - 14th September

The Preliminary Finals are played the following week 20th - 21st September with 4 teams trying to secure a ticket to the big dance.

The 2024 AFL Grand Final is scheduled to start at 2:30pm AEST on Saturday 28th September

How do AFL Finals work?

Since the turn of the millenium the AFL has used an 8 team championship playoff structure. The top 8 teams from the regular season participate in a 4 week tournament with 2 teams eliminated in each of the first 3 weeks of the championship. This culminates in two teams remaining that compete in the Grand Final for ultimate glory.

The system is designed to reward teams that finish higher on the ladder during the regular season with the top 4 teams needing only to win 2 games to reach the Grand Final compared to 3 games for the bottom 4 teams. The top 4 teams also get a "second chance" if they lose the Qualifying Final in Week 1.
